New geochemical database released

30 September 2004 - Details of a new comprehensive and standardised geochemical database for 30 major Taranaki oils has been released by geological research agency the Institute of Geological & Nuclear Sciences (GNS).

The database was acquired with co-funding from industry companies OMV New Zealand Ltd, Origin Energy Resources Ltd, Pogo Production Company, Todd Energy, and Swift Energy, who contributed $110,000 in external sponsorship for the project.

The database will be increased to 60 oils over the next 6 months and then interrogated using multivariate techniques to develop a clearer picture of the different oil families present in the basin.

Another recent source rock study has established that the paraffinic oil potential of some coaly source rocks, and the timing of oil generation, are in part controlled by the amount of leaf biomass in the coals.

This finding represents a major new paradigm for understanding the source of oil in Taranaki and other New Zealand basins.
