Two new Solid Energy permits in Waikato

8 December 2004 - Coal producer Solid Energy has been granted two new exploration permits in the Waikato area, as the Christchurch-based company continues its widespread programme of coal exploration.

One of the permits EP 40698 is a 1165 ha block at Rotowaro West near Solid Energy’s main operating opencast pit at Rotowaro near Huntly.

The other permit EP 40697 is a 526 ha area 10 km north of Huntly on the west side of the Waikato River to the north of Lake Rotongaro.

The work programmes for both permits in the first three years will involve conceptual mine studies, coal quality studies, preliminary resource modelling, 3D seismic reflection feasibility studies and reconnaissance drilling.

Solid Energy has been looking to develop more mines in the North Island to meet the rapidly growing demand for coal.
