19 January 2004 - Newmont Waihi has won two categories in the Newmont Australia Ltd 2003 excellence awards. The two categories are best safety performance and best community relations initiative.

The award for best community relations Initiative was awarded for the work the company has done in setting up and running the Martha Mine education centre.

Education officer Linda Willoughby said the award is a real tribute to the hard work that has been put in to make the facility and the programmes it ran what they are today. "We are thrilled with the recognition.”

Safety superintendent Andy Schmidt said the safety award was due to the combined efforts of all employees on site including the mining contractor, Macmahon, who with their subcontractors make up 65% of the onsite personnel.
