Austral Plans Cardiff-Cheal 3D Seismic Survey; Heaphy-1 Dry

28 February 2006 - Austral Pacific plans 80 sq km seismic survey in Cardiff-Cheal area but finds Heaphy-1 well dry.

Austral Pacific Energy Ltd is preparing for a new onshore Taranaki 3D seismic survey and also reports that its Heaphy-1 well is dry.

The company says that it plans an 80 sq km Brecon 3D seismic survey in April. Preparation for this survey, covering the Cardiff and Cheal structures and contiguous areas is now underway.

The 3D survey will be tied to adjacent 3D seismic surveys, and will be used to identify further development locations on the deep Cardiff gas structure, the shallower Cheal oil field, and further exploration targets along this oil and gas prone trend.

The company's next well operations will be work-overs on Cheal wells to be conducted in late March as part of the Cheal oil field development.

Subsequently, the Ratanui-1 exploration well will be drilled along trend from the Supplejack gas discovery in PEP 38741, and further Cheal appraisal wells will be drilled. (The Austral Pacific website lists Cheal-B1 and Cheal B-2 as among the next wells).

Also under consideration for the first half of 2006 is Kahili-2, which will target the Tariki sands updip from the Kahili-1A well.

The Heaphy-1 well in PEP 38746 has been plugged and abandoned after being drilled to a depth of 1450m. The well encountered good reservoir quality sandstones at the predicted target levels, but there was an absence of any significant hydrocarbon indications.
