Illegal Mining Prosecution Case

— filed under:

22 August 2007 - An incident of illegal mining of alluvial gold and gravel near the Snowy River north of Ikamatua has led to a successful prosecution under the Crown Minerals Act 1991. Mr John Leckie pleaded guilty to the charges against him and has been sentenced accordingly by the District Court at Greymouth.

Crown Minerals were informed by West Coast Regional Council of the alleged illegal mining activity. Following an investigation into the activities and scale of the alleged offence of the accused, it was decided to prosecute as there was clear evidence that Mr Leckie was removing gravel and alluvial gold without the consent of Crown Minerals in the form of an exploration or mining permit.

Crown Minerals view illegal mining activities as a serious offence. If any persons have any concerns about the permits required under the Crown Minerals Act, information is available on the Crown Minerals website (www.crownminerals.govt.nz) or by calling 0508 CM ESTATE.
