OceanaGold ships first gold concentrate from Reefton mine
23 May 2007 - The first shipment of gold ore concentrate from the Globe Progress open cut mine at Reefton has been transported to OceanaGold’s treatment facilities at its Macraes mine in east Otago.
This is the first hard rock gold production from the Reefton goldfield on the south Island West Coast in over half a century.
Melbourne-based OceanaGold says in its March quarter report that following final wet commissioning at the Globe Progress concentrate plant, regular shipments of concentrate started in March. The concentrate is trucked from the mine to nearby Reefton rail line and then by train to Palmerston north of Dunedin. The concentrate is then trucked the few kilometres to the large Macraes processing plant.
Total material movement at Reefton for the quarter was 3.3 million tonnes, slightly above budget, and run-of-mine stocks increased to 85,209 tonnes at 2.34 grams/tonne gold. OceanaGold reported that 613 tonnes of Reefton ore feed was added into the Macraes mill during the quarter.
Capital cost estimates to the completion of the project have not changed substantially in the last quarter and are currently 12% over budget. Capital spending at Globe Progress in the March quarter was $AU 16.1 million.
