Solid Energy granted coal gas permit in inland Taranaki
11 April 2007 - Coal producer Solid Energy has been granted a petroleum exploration permit for an area it considers prospective for coal seam gas in inland Taranaki-King Country.
The new 980 sq km PEP 38 778 follows Solid Energy's recent discovery of gas associated with coals within the Maryville coal measures in PEP 38 614 immediately north of PEP 38 778.
Solid Energy says the permit area contains a 1965 petroleum exploration well Puniwhakau-1, drilled in the south of the PEP 38 778, which contained numerous coals with gas shows within the well’s Mokau Group sediments.
If coal and associated gas is present between the
Puniwhahau-1 well and the northern boundary of PEP 38 778 this would represent a significant coal seam gas (coalbed
methane) resource, the company says.
Solid Energy says its exploration philosophy will be to track coal occurrence by drilling scout wells in a step wise fashion south of the currently defined Taranaki coalfield margins towards the Puniwhakau-1 well. It has committed to drilling three scout wells per year for the first three years of the permit duration.
The planned exploration is unlikely to locate coal at mineable depths and is focussed on measuring the gas content of coals in the region for coal seam gas resource assessment, Solid Energy says.
