Eastern signs contract to sell more Cascade coal to cement plant

16 September 2008, Source: Eastern Corporation and Lindsay Clark - Queensland-based coal company Eastern Corporation Ltd has increased production at its Cascade mine near Westport following the signing of a new coal contract with the Holcim cement plant at Cape Foulwind.

Eastern says in its June quarter report that Holcim has always been the mine’s largest customer but under this contract the tonnage has increased to approximately 90% of the Cascade mine’s production.

To supply this increased tonnage, operating hours at the mine have been extended to a 7 day a week operation. The mine also continues to service several other industrial contracts in the Canterbury and South Canterbury regions.

A review of plant and equipment at the mine is currently underway to look at future options for processing needs.

The Cascade open cut coal mine, 25 km north-east of Westport, produces low ash, low sulphur coal.

Meanwhile, at Eastern’s Takitimu coal mine in the Ohai-Nightcaps area of western Southland, overburden has been stripped and the first delivery made to Fonterra’s Clandeboye milk processing plant in south Canterbury.

Eastern has contracted to supply 130,000 tonnes a year of sub-bituminous coal to the plant, moving the coal by rail.
