22 March 2010

With the release of the discussion document on Schedule 4 lands, and the announcement that the Government intends to invest approximately $4 million over the next 9 months, to improve technical knowledge of mineral potential in those areas proposed for removal from Schedule 4 as well as a number of other high potential mineral areas outside of Schedule 4. The Minister for Energy and Resources, Gerry Brownlee, has closed a number of areas for mineral (metallic and coal) permitting for a period of nine months, for the purposes of considering those areas of land for allocation of permits by competitive tender.

Once technical investigations are completed, the Minister will decide which areas will proceed for competive tender and those which will be removed from reservation.
