Bathurst announced to the Australian Stock Exchange that it has begun a definitive feasibility study for the Buller project appointing St Louis, Missouri-based mining consultants Marston International as its study managers.

Bathurst managing director Hamish Bohannan said the Buller project includes a portfolio of advanced near-surface coal deposits and open-cut mining access.

“In addition the project includes a pipeline of brown-field and advanced exploration projects with two permits covering over 100 sq km in the coalfield”, Mr Bohannan said.

He said Bathurst is confident of its ability to develop a one million tonne per annum coal mine producing mainly high quality coking coal should the results of definitive feasibility study confirm Bathurst’s initial internal analysis.

Bathurst recently withdrew from its coal interests in the United States to concentrate on New Zealand.

L&M Coal, a subsidiary of the Christchurch-based L&M Group, holds two minerals exploration permits in New Zealand, both in the Buller area. One is the 35 km long 40268, covering 22,020 ha. The second permit 51078 is the 680 ha Coal Creek area south of the Mokihinui River.
