Comet Ridge moves to test first CSG pilot well on West Coast

28 June 2010 - Brisbane-based Comet Ridge Ltd has completed and fitted for production testing its first coal seam gas pilot well in New Zealand, the Macdonald 4P well near Greymouth.

Sources: Comet Ridge and Lindsay Clark

Production tubing was completed at the Macdonald 4P pilot well and a pump run in the well.

The drill rig which drilled the well has undergone maintenance work before being moved to the site of the nearby Macdonald 6P well so that it too can be drilled and completed for production testing.

Pressure monitoring gauges were also now been installed on two nearby observation wells (Macdonald 5C and RM 1) with the intention of proving the continuity of the productive coals in this area of the block.

This well programme is being operated by Comet Ridge’s wholly-owned subsidiary Chartwell NZ Pty Ltd.

The recent drilling operation means Chartwell has now met the requirements of phase 2 of the farm-in of PMP 50100 and subsequently the additional 30 % equity is in the process of being released from escrow to take Chartwell’s equity level in the mining permit to 50 %.

Chartwell and partner Macdonald Investments Ltd of Wellington will then hold a 50 % each of PMP 50100.

The joint venture is also carrying out power feasibility studies regarding using gas produced from the pilot wells to form the basis of a generation scheme to supply electricity for sale into the local power grid.
