Newmont begins drilling Wharekirauponga prospect north of Waihi
17 May 2010 - Newmont Waihi Gold recently began drilling at the Wharekirauponga (‘WKP’) gold prospect about 10 km north of Waihi.

Newmont’s joint venture partner Glass Earth Gold Ltd said that Wharekirauponga is a 2 km long mineralised alteration zone, just 5 km north east of the Golden Cross deposit where 634,000 oz of gold was produced in the 1990's.
Glass Earth Gold said the WKP epithermal system has magnetic/alteration characteristics similar to the Martha mine and has open-along-strike potential for several kilometres southward, being at least 900 m long, 150 m wide, and unconstrained to over 300 m depth.
Exploration in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s identified a very extensive altered and gold mineralized system with multiple intersections including:
150 m @ 0.93 g/t Au, including 17.7 m at 4.0 g/t Au; 17.1 m @ 3.87 g/t Au; 32 m @1.45 g/t Au; 2 m @ 7.7g/t Au; 3.1 m @ 9.7g/t Au and 1 m @48 g/t Au.
Glass Earth said initial drilling by Newmont is to target a zone of strong silicification and veining between 180-380 m, with further drilling also targeting a second parallel 500 m plus vein system not previously drill tested.
