New Zealand Energy Quarterly - June Quarter 2011
20 September 2011 - The New Zealand Energy Quarterly provides quarterly statistics and trend data on the supply of major fuels, electricity generation and its associated greenhouse gas emissions, and liquid fuel prices.
This publication is part of the suite of energy publications produced by the Energy Information and Modelling Group of the Ministry of Economic Development.
You can view this edition on the MED website.
Highlights for the minerals and petroleum sectors include:
Crude oil production down 6 percent
The decrease this quarter was due to small production drops at various fields. Maari, the largest oil field, recorded the lowest quarterly production in its history due to problems with the pumps at the off-shore oil platform. However, Cheal, one of the smaller fields, recorded its highest production. This rise in production was achieved by upgrades to the artificial lift systems at the production facility.
Gas production up 12 percent
Gas production in this June quarter was up 12 percent from the unusually low March quarter, but down 11 percent from the previous June quarter. The increase this year was due to production at Maui and Kapuni recovering from a 31 year low.
Maui still produced 20 percent less than in June 2010 while Kapuni increased production to a two and a half year high. Maari dropped production by 30 percent compared to the March quarter due to pump problems and a five day maintenance shutdown at the end of June.
Coal production up 8 percent
The increase this quarter was due to most mines returning to full production after the effects of the Christchurch earthquakes. The Solid Energy-owned Spring Creek mine returned to full production in May following safety improvements. Spring Creek is the second largest operating coking coal mine in New Zealand and produces for export markets.
