The Onshore/Offshore Canterbury Blocks Offer closed on 30 May 2003.

Where were the blocks?

The Offer consisted of five blocks.

What permits were awarded?

On 18 August 2004, two exploration permits were awarded:


2003 Offshore Deepwater Taranaki
 

When was the Block Offer?

The Offshore Deepwater Taranaki Blocks Offer closed on 30 September 2003.

Where were the blocks?

The Offer consisted of five blocks.

What permits were awarded?

2003 Onshore Taranaki and Offshore North Taranaki
 

When was the Block Offer?

The Onshore Taranaki and Offshore North Taranaki Block Offers were announced on 12 May 2003 and closed on 31 October 2003.

Where were the blocks?

The Offers consisted of 17 blocks (nine offshore and eight onshore).

The nine offshore blocks were in an area extending from Cape Egmont to west of Kawhia Harbour in water depths up to 200 m.

The eight onshore blocks are all north of a line extending east-west through Mount Taranaki.

What permits were awarded?

On 5 February 2004, 13 exploration permits were awarded:

  • PEP 38485 was awarded to OMV New Zealand Ltd., Origin Energy Resources NZ Ltd., and Todd Petroleum Mining Co. Ltd.
  • PEP 38486 & PEP 38487 were awarded to Todd Petroleum Mining Co. Ltd.
  • PEP 38488, PEP 38489 & PEP 38490 were awarded to Pogo Producing Company.
  • PEP 38762 was awarded to Greymouth Petroleum Ltd.
  • PEP 38763 & PEP 38764 were awarded to Discovery Geo (Australia) Corp., and CSR New Zealand Exploration, LLC.
  • PEP 38765 was awarded to Tap (New Zealand) Pty Ltd., Austral Pacific Energy (NZ) Ltd., Magellan Petroleum (NZ) Ltd., and Durum Energy (NZ) Ltd.
  • PEP 38766 was awarded to Tap (New Zealand) Pty Ltd., Austral Pacific Energy (NZ) Ltd. and Magellan Petroleum (NZ) Ltd.
  • PEP 38767 was awarded to ROC Oil Company Ltd., Westech Energy New Zealand, and Bridge Petroleum Ltd.
  • PEP 38768 was awarded to Petroleum Resources Ltd. and Austral Pacific Energy (NZ) Ltd.

2005 Offshore Northland

The Offshore Outer Taranaki Block Offer closed on 17 February 2006.

The Offer consisted of three blocks.

What permits were awarded?

2005-2006 Offshore East Coast

The Offshore East Coast Exploration Permit Blocks Offer was announced on 1 September 2005 and closed on 17 February 2006.

Where were the blocks?

The Offer consisted of four blocks.

What permits were awarded?

On 22 May 2006 one exploration permit was awarded (over a combination of three blocks):


 
2005-2006 Offshore Taranaki
 

When was the Block Offer?

The Offshore Taranaki Petroleum Exploration Permit Block Offer was announced on 27 October 2005 and closed on 17 February 2006.

Where were the blocks?

The Offer consisted of 9 blocks.

What permits were awarded?

Four exploration permits were awarded:

  • PEP 38 772 was awarded to Hugh Green Energy Ltd.
  • PEP 38 773 & 38 775  were awarded to Petrochem Ltd.
  • PEP 38 774 was awarded to Highland Exploration Corp.

 


 
2006-2007 Offshore Great South Basin
 

When was the Block Offer?

The Offshore Great South Basin Petroleum Exploration Permit Block Offer was announced on 1 February 2006 and closed on 2 April 2007.

Where were the blocks?

The Offer consisted of 40 blocks.

What permits were awarded?

Five exploration permits were awarded (covering approx. two blocks each):

  • Map of the permits awarded [945 kB PDF]
  • PEP 50 117 was awarded to ExxonMobil New Zealand (Exploration) Ltd. (90%) and Todd Exploration Ltd. (10%) and is a 16390 km2 block 120 nautical miles south of Bluff.
  • PEP 50 119 was awarded to OMV New Zealand Ltd. (36%), Mitsui E&P Australia Pty Ltd. (28%) and PTTEP Offshore Investment Company Ltd. (36%) and is a 23860 km2 block immediately southeast of Dunedin.
  • PEP 50 120 was awarded to OMV New Zealand Ltd. (36%), Mitsui E&P Australia Pty Ltd. (28%) and PTTEP Offshore Investment Company Ltd. (36%) and is a 8353 km2 block 60 Nautical Miles south of Dunedin.
  • PEP 50 121 was awarded to OMV New Zealand Ltd. (36%), Mitsui E&P Australia Pty Ltd. (28%) and PTTEP Offshore Investment Company Limited (36%) and is a 16520 km2 block immediately southeast of Steward Island.
  • PEP 50 122 was awarded to Greymouth Gas Taranaki Ltd. (50%) and Greymouth Gas Exploration Ltd. (50%) and is a 15,740 km2 block onshore and offshore Southland and Catlins Coast.
     

 
2007-2008 Onshore Taranaki
 

When was the Block Offer?

The Onshore Taranaki Petroleum Blocks Offer was announced on 3 December 2007 and closed on 30 May 2008.

Where were the blocks?

The Offer consisted of 11 blocks.

What permits were awarded?

Nine exploration permits were awarded:

  • Map of the permits awarded [1.77 MB PDF]
  • PEP 51149, was awarded to Todd Exploration Ltd. (operator) (70%) and Mighty River Power Gas Investments (30%). The permit covers 635.8 km2 on the West of the Taranaki Peninsula.
  • PEP 51156 was awarded to Todd Exploration Ltd. (100%). The permit covers 90.4 km2 and lies in the north east of the Taranaki Peninsula between the Mangahewa and Ngatoro Mining Permits. 
  • PEP’s 51152, 51154, 51157 were awarded to Greymouth Petroleum Taranaki Ltd. (operator) (50%) and Greymouth Petroleum 2008 Ltd. (50%). PEP 51152 covers 106.3 km2 and lies next to the Egmont National Park between the Kapuni and Surrey mining permits. PEP 51154 covers 96.1 km2 and meets PEP 51152 in the south west of the permit, while the north of the permit meets the Mckee field. PEP 51157 covers 51.1 km2 and lies in between the Egmont National Park and existing exploration permit PEP 38763.
  • PEP 51153 & PEP 51155 were awarded to Kea Petroleum Ltd (operator) (40%), Hardie Energy NZ Ltd(30%), and Rawson Taranaki Ltd(30%). PEP 51153 covers 210.8 km2 and lies to the east of the Waihapa and Kahili fields, while PEP 51154 covers 262.6 km2 and extends from the Kahili field to the north coast of the Taranaki Peninsula.
  • PEP 51150 was awarded to Green Gate Ltd. (operator) (33.3%) and GB Energy Ltd. (66.7%), covers 374.2 km2 and lies to the south of the Taranaki Peninsula, between the Kapuni and Kauri fields.
  • PEP 51151 was awarded to a joint venture between L&M Petroleum Ltd. (operator) (50%) and Mosiac Oil NL (50%), and covers 457.8 km2 extending from the Kauri field to the Waihapa field.

2008-2010 Offshore Raukumara
 

When was the Block Offer?

The Raukumara Block Offer was announced on 10 December 2008 and closed on 28 January 2010.

Where were the blocks?

The Offer consisted of two blocks.

The Raukumara Basin lies offshore of the East Cape in the North Island. The two blocks covered 17,288 km2 area of prospective offshore acreage, with water depths of up to 2,400 m in the northern reaches.

What permits were awarded?

One exploration permit was awarded:

  • Map of the permit awarded [476 kB PDF]
  • PEP 52707 was awarded to Petrobras International Braspetro B.V. The permit covers 12,330 km2 and extends from 4 km off the coast to 110 km offshore. The awarded permit is comprised of all of the southern Block 2 and a portion of the northern Block 1.

 
2008-2010 Offshore Northland
 

When was the Block Offer?

The Northland Block Offer was announced on 10 December 2008 and announced on 18 August 2010.

Where were the blocks?

The Northland Block Offer consisted of 6 blocks covering approximately 49,500 km2 of prospective acreage in water depths ranging from the coastline on the eastern border to approximately 1,800 meters in the west

What permits were awarded?

Northland Block Offer attracted interest from local and international companies but no permit awards were announced.

 



2010 Offshore Reinga
 

When was the Block Offer?

The Reinga Block Offer was announced on 20 January 2010 and closed on 18 August 2010.

Where were the blocks?

The Reinga Block Offer consisted of 6 blocks covering approximately 105,000 km2 of prospective offshore acreage in water depths typically between 1,750 - 2,000 meters.

What permits were awarded?

The Reinga Block Offer attracted interest from local and international companies but no permit awards were announced.

The Onshore Taranaki Kahili Block Offer was announced on 10 February 2010 and closed on 3 May 2010.

Where were the blocks?

The Offer consisted of 1 block.
