Core Store

Companies exploring for oil, gas and minerals in New Zealand are required to submit physical samples of core and cuttings collected during the process of drilling to New Zealand Petroleum & Minerals. This material is held in confidence for a period of up to five years before becoming available for any member of industry or the research community to access and sample.

The 2300m2 National Core Store houses both petroleum and minerals core and has fit for purpose viewing facilities. 


The Core Store is easily reached from Wellington City by car or train.

Visiting the Core Store

The Core Store can be visited by appointment only. At least 48 hours' notice must be given. Please ensure that you have read the guidelines and filled out the access form.

Submitting samples

In accordance with the Crown Minerals (Petroleum) Regulations 2007 permit holders must supply well samples within 120 days of completion of drilling.

All samples submitted must be clearly labelled, well boxed and arrive in good condition. Failure to comply with these standards will incur a cost to the client.

Transportation of the core and cuttings to the Core Store is the sole responsibility of the submitting company.

For Coal Seam Gas wells please refer to clause 51A of the Crown Mineral (Petroleum) Regulations 2007 to see the circumstances under which core or sidewall core samples must be submitted.
