Block Offer 2014 - New area of consultation

Publish date: 9 December 2013

An area in offshore Taranaki has become available for exploration that New Zealand Petroleum & Minerals would like to include in the Block Offer 2014 tender.

Permit 51588 was granted to Todd Exploration Limited in 2009 allowing them to explore for oil & gas in an offshore area north of New Plymouth. Todd Exploration Limited has surrendered this permit, which means they have given up these rights.

New Zealand Petroleum & Minerals has added this area to the proposed 2014 Taranaki Basin Block 14TAR-R1.

The Crown Minerals Act requires NZP&M to consult with affected iwi and hapū in the area before determining the final tender. On 14 November we completed consultation for Block Offer 2014. As this change is significant, we have started consulting with affected iwi and hapū, within 100km of the area added to the block. We will also seek feedback from local government.

Consultation will begin on 9 December 2013 and end on 3 March 2014.

Consultation will only consider the new area. We will not be consulting on the original block a second time.
