MBIE developing Gas Transition Plan

Publish date: 8 September 2022

The Government is working to develop a plan for an equitable transition for the fossil gas sector.

As set out in the Emissions Reduction Plan, the Government has agreed to begin work to develop a Gas Transition Plan (the Plan) that will help to guide the fossil gas sector to reduce emissions, in line with our legislated targets, emissions budgets, and international commitments.

The Plan will also investigate the potential roles of renewable gases and other low emissions gas technologies, and potential measures for accelerating their uptake.

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) is working with the gas industry co-regulator, the Gas Industry Company, to develop the Plan. It’s expected to be completed by the end of 2023.

MBIE and the Gas Industry Company intend to speak with stakeholders, including the gas industry, consumers, non-government organisations, Treaty partners and other interested parties at various points throughout the Plan’s development.

If you have questions or want to engage with MBIE on the Gas Transition Plan you can email gastransition@mbie.govt.nz.
