New South Island Aeromagnetic and soil Geochemistry data available
New data from aeromagnetic and regional soil geochemical surveys completed in the 2016/2017 survey season in Murchison, Otago and northern Southland are now available.
NZP&M commissioned aeromagnetic surveys in Nelson/Marlborough, Murchison and Southland/Otago. Regional soil geochemistry surveys were also commissioned over these same areas to create layered datasets.
Once completed, the aeromagnetic surveys, combined with previous surveys by government and the minerals industry, will provide aeromagnetic data for over 30 percent of New Zealand. The surveys are part of an $8 million government investment in new data, announced in Budget 2014.
Aeromagnetic and geochemical data is used to understand the geology of an area. It helps with identifying mineral deposits, and provides information on faults, aquifers, and soils.
The soil geochemical survey sampled 909 sites in the northern South Island and Otago at 8km grid spacing. 4km and 2km spaced surveys were conducted over selected areas.
The regional aeromagnetic surveying programme is now over 75% complete having acquired more than 140,000 line kilometres of data.
