Permit processing timeframes: January-April 2026 update
We have now published our processing timeframes for January to April 2026.
Our performance against permit processing timeframes
We are currently experiencing a significant increase in both the number and complexity of permit applications across the minerals sector. While improvements over the past two years have reduced historic backlogs and strengthened our permitting processes and guidance, current volumes are placing renewed pressure on processing timeframes.
As a result, new applications may not be processed within our targeted timeframes for the foreseeable future.
Supporting timely decisions
One of the key factors influencing processing timeframes is the quality and completeness of information provided with applications. When information is unclear or incomplete, further engagement is often required to progress assessment, which can delay decisions both for individual applications and across the wider queue.
Some areas we are seeing recurring gaps in supporting information with applications, includes:
- spatial and plotting data
- evidence of technical and financial capability
- resource estimation for Tier 1 and Tier 2 permit applications
- work programmes and expenditure.
Preparing an application
Submitting a complete and well-prepared application helps support a more timely assessment process.
Before applying for a permit, applicants should:
- consult the application guidance available on our website
- use NZP&M templates and checklists
- ensure all required supporting information is complete, clear, and accurate.
Taking time upfront to prepare a strong application reduces the need for follow-up and supports a more efficient process for all applicants.
We will continue to publish quarterly performance updates and work with the sector to improve application quality and regulatory outcomes.
